Quincy Jones & MF Doom
In the early 90s, I bought Quincy Jones’ album Back On The Block because the cover and artist lineup caught my eye. I couldn't stop playing it; it featured a powerful mix of American black music styles like jazz, funk, rap, and soul. Recently, while talking with Judd Wasserman after his performance at SeaTac Airport for Gigs4U, he mentioned a great song called "The Dude." So when I returned to my car I just put on the whole CD. The 1981 album included two songs I recognized from the radio: "Just Once" and "One Hundred Ways." Listening to "One Hundred Ways" for the first time in over a decade, the synth solo by Greg Phillinganes struck me, especially since it was sampled by MF Doom in "Rhymes Like Dimes." My respect for Quincy Jones and his incredible musical contributions is immense.
